Everyone gets a summer reading list from school, but how about a summer LISTENING list for those summer roadtrips, beach days, and laying by the pool times? I love a good podcast more than just about anything. See some of my previous recommendations here!
Below is my 2023 Summer Listening List of Podcasts to keep you captivated and entertained during your summer activities. There is a good mix of true crime, non-fiction, and storytelling so give them a listen and let me know your favorites!
High Strange
If you are looking for some other-wordly stories, check out High Strange, a podcast that investigates the true stories behind some of the most infamous UFO sightings. Payne Lindsey tries to break the stigma surrounding the topic of UFO’s, interviewing people who have had legitimate expreices, from navy pilots to ordinary citizens. I appreciate this show because it makes you ask questions about your beliefs on UFO’s and really makes you ask if you want to believe…
Ologies
Indulge your inner science nerd and listen to the Ologies Podcast, a comedic science show where professionals from very niche scientific backgrounds (somnology, bryology, philematology) are interviewed about their backgrounds and fields of study. If you want to keep learning over your summer break and have always wondered what Delphinology is (its the study of dolphins!) then this is the summer podcast for you. There is a HUGE back catalogue so you are sure to find an episode that interests you.
Smoke Screen: Just Say You’re Sorry
A true crime gem! If you’ve ever wondered what happens when investigators badger someone into confessing to a crime they never committed, Just Say You’re Sorry is a chilling tale of one man who lived this nightmare. This series examines how police and detectives hold so much power over those being interrogated and can get someone to confess to a crime they could not have done. This is for the true crime lovers who need to keep their fix going through the summer.
Maintenance Phase
Feeling the pressure to get summer body ready? The hosts of the HILARIOUS podcast Maintenance Phase dive into some of the health claims, myths, and fads we grew up with and debunk them in the funniest way possible. Warning: there is A LOT of cursing on this podcast (so maybe not kid friendly), but if you curious how in the world celery juice became a thing or if the Keto Diet is right for you, this podcast will answer those questions. The hosts have some of the best banter I’ve ever heard and I appreciate the fresh take on long held “wellness wisdom,”
The Message/Life After
An oldie but a goodie. If you are a fan of the radio drama, The Message and its sequel Life After is the perfect, bite sized podcast you can tear through in an afternoon. What would happen if an alien transmission from decades ago becomes an urgent puzzle with life or death consequences? What if deceased loved ones could be digitally resurrected? This highly produced, well written series is a great way to feel like you’re watching a movie while still being able to fold laundry or go for a walk. One of my all time favorites!
