This summer, I wanted to spruce up one of the last spaces in our home that I had yet to tackle in terms of decorating after the move. The inside is 99% done, so the outdoor spaces were the last places I needed to work on. I updated our front porch (see before and after here) so of course the back porch was next.
Since it is an outdoor space, I wanted to go a little bit warmer in terms of colors and aesthetic so rather than keeping the silver/gray/blue theme of the indoors, I went 180 degrees in the opposite direction and chose warmer toned golds, greens, and wooden accents. I was nervous since we had such a large black and white rug already and trying to match warmer tones can be tricky with such stark contrast, but I think it all came together nicely.
My kickoff point was fining this set of 2 floral sketch framed art pieces from Target. I was looking for some kind of floral art since it was an outdoor space and florals are a natural fit with that. It was a challenge to find something in my budget that would also be large enough to fill the space I needed it to. There is nothing worse than too small art in too large a space.
Next I found this large gold metalwork piece that I knew would help bring the metallic element in nicely. I didn’t want to go too brassy with the gold, and this 36″x36″ piece filled the bill perfectly. It hangs behind our grill since it is metal and I don’t have to worry about the grill scorching it.
I purchased flowers and planter pots along with some décor to fill in the plant ladder I’ve had for ages. Since I don’t have a garden (yet), this is my space to bring in all the bright colors and try my had at keeping things alive through the Texas summers. I didn’t really have much of a plan or color scheme when choosing the plants, I just grabbed what brought me joy. I love how it turned out and how it brings so much vibrancy to the space.
Lastly, I did want a bit of a hanging garden look so I combined a few pieces from different sets that tied together the green from the photos and the gold from the metalwork. I had to find really strong command hooks to give it the floating garden look, but they work great!
I had more black and white décor on the table originally, but decided to update that as well to fit with the new theme. A simple wooden tray and some faux greenery brought the brightness and warmth from the walls to the table. The citronella candle works double duty as being part of the table décor, but when you light it, it helps repel the flies.
All in all, I am so happy with how the space turned out. It is cozy and cheery and perfect for the long summer nights and holiday cookouts. I recently convinced my husband to relocate the grill down a bit so I can use the corner space to set up a small sitting area with a few comfy chairs and a small table. I envision this as my morning coffee space, but it will most likely have to wait until the spring to come to fruition. Something to look forward to I guess!
