While some people enjoy lazy summer days with a good beach read or summer thriller novel, my summer days are spent mostly indoors at work which leaves little time for lounging around with a good book. I still like a good story which makes podcasts the perfect option for me. Below I’ve listed my top 5 podcasts I’ve listened to so far this summer that are just as juicy as that summer romance novel.
22 Hours: An American Nightmare
This is my new true crime obsession podcast that I’m sure will easily be one of my top 10 of all time. The series covers the trial and of Daron Wint and the circumstances surrounding his actions in the DC Mansion Murders which left a prominent family murdered in their home after being held hostage in their home for 22 hours. The storytelling in this show is exceptional, laying out the story of this horrific situation like a novel with insightful interviews with those involved and courtroom audio that makes you feel like you are hearing the case unfold in front of you. There are some graphic details described so this one is not for young listeners, but fans of Serial and Dr. Death will find that his podcasts is on par with production quality and a compelling story .
Confronting OJ Simpson
I was too young to know what was going on during the OJ Simpson trials in the early 1990’s so listening to this podcast has helped me catch up what is aptly known as the trial of century from a unique and heart wrenching lens. Kim Goldman, sister to Ron Goldman, the other man murdered by OJ Simpson, tells her story about what it was like going through the OJ Simpson trial and seeking justice for her murdered brother. This podcast is almost therapy for her in how she recounts the effects of the last 30 years on her life and how she is dealing with a reality where OJ Simpson is a free man. If you enjoy heartfelt reflections and a new side to a well-known story, check this podcast out.
Man in the Window
The Golden State Killer has been one of the most buzzed about serial killers after his identify was discovered after decades of hiding in plain sight. This podcast covers some of the never before publicized details about the man who became a notorious serial killer. This creepy, true crime podcast interviews some of the earliest known victims of the Golden State Killer and details his path of destruction throughout California. For those who love current events and true crime, this is a great summer listen. This podcast may also not be great for young listeners.
The WoMed
Of course I’m going to like a podcast made by two nurses about the medical world! Dani and Danielle, two nurses with vastly different backgrounds talk each week about what life is like as a nurse, from working the nightshift to their grossest stories. They give an insightful perspective into the world of nursing that is good for people who are not in the medical field to hear and is affirming for those of us who do work in healthcare. Their heartfelt stories about moments that made them love being a nurse and funny anecdotes about the hilarities that can only be found at the bedside are a great listen for nurses and non-nurses alike.
This Sounds Serious
Just like every summer vacation needs a light, airy book, this podcast is the sarcastic, not too serious take on a true crime investigation. The second season of this dramatized take on true crime reporting is the perfect balance of a great story layered with just enough ridiculous details to make it fun. The story of “The Most Missing Woman in America” will leave you wondering for a moment if this story is real only to remind you that this could never happen in real life…hopefully…
